About this project
A homeowner in Melville called us after the motor and remotes on their double sectional garage door stopped working. They had already tried disengaging and re-engaging the opener and putting new batteries in the remotes, with no luck.
Our technician carried out a full service and inspection of the door, which is around four years old. The door was found to be excessively heavy, and the springs appear to be incorrectly sized for its weight. Additional tension was applied to the springs, but the door is still not fully balanced.
The extra weight is likely to have placed strain on the motor. After reprogramming, the motor and remotes are now operating again.
The underlying balance issue remains, though, and may continue to affect the motor over time. We’ve let the homeowner know, so they can consider correctly sized springs to properly balance the door and protect the motor.
A door that is too heavy for its springs makes the opener work harder on every cycle. Picking this up during a service gives the homeowner the chance to fix the root cause before it leads to a motor failure.
